Panic has gripped residents of Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State after gunmen launched a deadly attack on the community on Sunday, March 29.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers, reportedly on motorcycles, opened fire on a group of youths, leaving several persons feared dead, although the exact number of casualties remains unclear.

The incident sparked unrest in the area, with aggrieved youths barricading major roads in protest, raising concerns over a possible escalation of violence.

In response, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area to contain the situation and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, in an official statement, condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked.”

Authorities said the curfew, which commenced at midnight on Sunday, will remain in force until April 1, 2026, while security agencies intensify operations to apprehend those behind the assault.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang assured residents of the government’s commitment to restoring peace, noting that security personnel have been deployed to the affected area. He urged the public to stay vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

The violence has also disrupted academic activities at the University of Jos, prompting the institution to postpone examinations earlier scheduled for March 30 and 31.

The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in Plateau State, coming weeks after a deadly ambush in Kanam Local Government Area where over 20 security operatives and vigilantes were reportedly killed by armed bandits.
