Residents of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area could face a ₦50,000 fine or up to six months’ imprisonment if a proposed environmental bye-law aimed at improving sanitation and waste management is passed into law.
The proposed legislation would make it mandatory for every household within the council area to place a waste bin or waste drum outside their homes for proper refuse disposal.
The bill also seeks to tackle environmental challenges, including open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, as part of efforts to promote a cleaner environment and safeguard public health.
Council officials said the proposed bye-law is currently undergoing public consultation, allowing residents and stakeholders to make inputs before it is presented for final approval and implementation.
According to the officials, if the legislation is eventually passed, copies of the law will be distributed to police stations, markets, community development associations and other public places to ensure residents are adequately informed of the new requirements and penalties.
The proposed bye-law forms part of the council’s broader efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and encourage proper waste disposal practices across the community.
