The Federal Government has renewed its commitment to strengthening the safety and resilience of schools across Nigeria, urging stakeholders to take coordinated action to protect learners, teachers and educational institutions from violence, insecurity and other threats.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, made the call in Abuja during the commemoration of the 2026 International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

The event brought together stakeholders who emphasised the need for sustained vigilance, effective coordination, timely response mechanisms and stronger community involvement in protecting schools.

Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to ensure that schools remain safe and conducive environments for teaching and learning, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said the government was strengthening the national Safe Schools framework through the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools, the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools and the dedicated Department of School Safety within the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the Minister, the government is also advancing measures aimed at improving school safety data collection, risk assessment, early-warning systems and emergency preparedness.

Other areas being prioritised, he said, include child safeguarding, psychosocial support and continuity of learning in situations where schools are affected by insecurity or other emergencies.

The Federal Government called for stronger collaboration among education authorities, security agencies, communities, parents and development partners to build resilient schools where children can learn without fear and teachers can perform their duties with confidence.
