The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total and indefinite strike across the three Lagos State-owned universities over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the union.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo; Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto/Ijanikin; and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu.

The decision was reached on Tuesday at separate congresses held by ASUU branches in the three institutions.

The strike followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026, demanding the domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FG agreement in the state-owned universities.

In a joint statement titled, “Expiration of Ultimatum: ASUU Declares Total, Indefinite Strike Across Lagos State-owned Universities,” the union said the industrial action took effect immediately.

The statement was signed by ASUU-LASU Coordinator, Dr Olusegun Babalola; Acting ASUU-LASUED Coordinator, Comrade Grace Olayemi; and ASUU-LASUSTECH Coordinator, Comrade Murisiku Onigemo.

According to the union, the decision became necessary after the 14-day ultimatum elapsed without a satisfactory resolution or concrete commitment from the state government.

ASUU said it had issued a final warning on September 10, stressing that “silence is no longer an option,” but added that the September 13 deadline also passed without the government initiating dialogue.

The union said its major demand was the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities.

It specifically mentioned the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and other critical welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff as part of the outstanding issues.

ASUU said it had exercised restraint and consistently pursued dialogue, arguing that responsibility for the disruption rested with the Lagos State Government because of what it described as continued inaction.

The union further disclosed that the strike had the backing of its national leadership, following a series of engagements and formal communications with university managements, governing councils and the Visitor before the ultimatum was issued.

It urged the Lagos State Government to emulate other state governors who, according to the union, had moved swiftly to resolve similar disputes involving state-owned universities.

ASUU warned that the strike would remain indefinite until meaningful engagement produces a satisfactory resolution and the state government signs, domesticates and fully implements the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement.

While expressing regret over the likely impact of the strike on the academic calendar and the wider university community, the union appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders for their understanding and support.

It stressed that the industrial action was not targeted at the managements of the three universities but was aimed at compelling the Lagos State Government to address the outstanding demands.

Lagos State is among the 20 states identified by ASUU at the national level as yet to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
