Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to motorists and commuters to exercise patience following severe traffic congestion around the Kara Bridge corridor after a multiple accident involving trucks.
The governor said the situation had been further compounded by ongoing repair works on the bridge, which have reduced the available road space for motorists.
Sanwo-Olu, in a statement, said officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), emergency response teams, security agencies and other traffic management personnel had been deployed to the area to ease the congestion and keep traffic moving.
“ I understand the frustration of Lagosians commuting out of Lagos and those going to their various destinations within the city, following a multiple accident involving trucks at Kara Bridge,” the governor said.
He explained that the ongoing repair work was expected to last about two weeks, during which traffic would be managed on the available side of the bridge.
The Federal Government had earlier announced that the two-week rehabilitation of the damaged expansion joints on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway would begin on September 8, with traffic initially restricted to one carriageway and controlled movement on the other.
Sanwo-Olu urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, obey traffic officials and cooperate with traffic management personnel deployed to the area.
“I appeal to all motorists to please be patient, obey the directions of traffic officials and plan their journeys where possible.
“Most importantly, we feel your pain. Please, stay safe,” he said.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Solutions platform also provides channels for motorists to report traffic incidents, accidents and other road-related issues.
