Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has clinched 16 medals to finish seventh among 23 universities that participated in the 15th West African Universities Games hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The university secured six silver and 10 bronze medals across four sporting events, showcasing the talents and competitive spirit of its student-athletes.

According to a statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, UNIOSUN won four silver and seven bronze medals in taekwondo, one silver and one bronze in chess, one bronze in tennis, one silver in javelin and one bronze in triple jump.

The Acting Director of Sports, Dr Teslim Kolawole, attributed the feat to the university’s sustained commitment to sports development and support for its student-athletes.

Kolawole said the performance was a reflection of the institution’s efforts to identify, nurture and develop sporting talents among its students.

He added that continued investment and support would enable the athletes to improve their performances and compete favourably at national and international competitions.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, congratulated the athletes and the university’s sports team on the achievement.

Adebooye commended their dedication, discipline and determination, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to identifying and developing sporting talents.

The Vice-Chancellor pledged continued support for the athletes, stressing that sports remained an important component of students’ development.

According to him, participation in sports helps students develop discipline, teamwork, resilience and leadership skills, while also enhancing the visibility and reputation of the university.

He urged the athletes to build on their performance at the games and strive for greater success in future competitions.

The 15th West African Universities Games brought together 23 universities from across the subregion at OAU, Ile-Ife, for competition in various sporting events.
