The University of Ibadan has marked the end of an era as Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, bows out after five years of transformative leadership as the institution’s 13th Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Adebowale, who assumed office on November 1, 2021, took charge of Nigeria’s premier university with a clearly defined ambition: to reposition the University of Ibadan as a truly “world-class institution for academic excellence geared towards meeting societal needs.”

Five years later, his tenure is being defined by a combination of institutional reforms, academic advancement, infrastructural renewal, digital transformation and a renewed culture of research, innovation and collaboration.

A distinguished Professor of Chemistry and scholar of international repute, Adebowale brought considerable academic experience and institutional credibility to the leadership of the university.

Under his administration, research and innovation received renewed attention, while the university strengthened partnerships with local and international institutions. Several Memoranda of Understanding entered into by the university were translated into active collaborations, creating opportunities for research, capacity development and institutional advancement.

The period also witnessed increased high-impact research publications, greater access to international research grants and collaborations, as well as strengthened postgraduate training.

Beyond academics, Adebowale’s administration pursued a broad digital transformation agenda designed to make university processes more efficient and accessible. Academic records, result processing and admission procedures were among the areas that benefited from the administration’s digitalisation drive.

One of the defining features of his tenure was the stability of the university’s academic calendar. For five consecutive years, the institution maintained a relatively stable academic cycle, a development that strengthened confidence among students, parents and staff while contributing to a more predictable academic environment.

His administration also placed emphasis on staff welfare, student entrepreneurship and institutional reforms, while sustaining a peaceful atmosphere across the university.

Leaving a Physical Legacy

Perhaps one of the most visible aspects of the Adebowale administration was the transformation of the university’s physical infrastructure.

Among the projects associated with his tenure is the ongoing New Senate Building, conceived as a landmark administrative facility befitting the status of Nigeria’s premier university.

Also completed is a 650-capacity lecture theatre, providing a modern learning environment particularly for students of the Open, Distance and e-Learning programme.

The administration also attracted and facilitated numerous TETFund and donor-funded projects, reflecting growing confidence among alumni, corporate organisations, development partners and international institutions in the university.

Across the campus, road rehabilitation, renovation of halls of residence and improvements to faculties and other facilities contributed to the physical renewal of the institution.

Repositioning the Premier University

Beyond physical projects, Adebowale’s tenure sought to strengthen the University of Ibadan’s position in the increasingly competitive global higher education landscape.

The university maintained its reputation as Nigeria’s foremost institution while recording improved visibility and competitiveness in international rankings, including the Times Higher Education and Webometrics rankings.

For many within the university community, the significance of the five-year tenure extends beyond individual projects. It is seen as a period in which administrative stability, academic ambition and institutional development were pursued simultaneously.

As Professor Adebowale bows out, the University of Ibadan is celebrating not merely the completion of a tenure, but the closing of a significant chapter in its institutional history.

His leadership has been characterised by humility, strategic thinking, innovation and a strong commitment to institutional development.

From the lecture halls to the laboratories, from administrative processes to the physical infrastructure of the campus, his five-year stewardship has left visible footprints.

As the University bids farewell to its 13th Vice-Chancellor, the community’s message is one of appreciation for a tenure it considers purposeful and transformative.

Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale came, served and left a legacy.

The University of Ibadan community wishes him greater accomplishments as he begins the next chapter of his career and public service.
