A Nigerian national, James Junior Aliyu, has been sentenced to 90 months (seven and a half years) in federal prison in the United States for his involvement in a large-scale wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy.

According to U.S. authorities, Aliyu was part of a syndicate that executed sophisticated Business Email Compromise (BEC) schemes, targeting corporate email systems to intercept legitimate financial communications and redirect payments into accounts controlled by fraudsters.

Court documents revealed that the operation led to significant financial losses for victims, prompting a comprehensive investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through its arm, Homeland Security Investigations.

In addition to his prison sentence, the court ordered Aliyu to forfeit $1.2 million in illicit proceeds and pay $2.4 million in restitution to affected victims.

Authorities confirmed that upon completion of his sentence, Aliyu will be deported from the United States.

Special agents from Homeland Security Investigations in Maryland and South Africa commended the multinational collaboration that led to the successful prosecution, highlighting the growing global effort to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes.

The case underscores the continued commitment of U.S. law enforcement agencies, in partnership with international counterparts, to tackle transnational fraud schemes targeting businesses and individuals.
