The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory following the confirmation of a new Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Kasaï Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to health authorities in the DRC, as of September 4, 2025, the outbreak has resulted in 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including four healthcare workers.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, the NCDC confirmed that no cases of Ebola have been reported in Nigeria. The agency, however, assured Nigerians that it is closely monitoring the regional and global situation while strengthening national preparedness.
Dr. Idris noted that the NCDC is working in collaboration with relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and international partners to enhance disease surveillance, boost laboratory diagnostics, and support frontline healthcare systems across the country.
As part of preventive measures, Nigerians are advised to:
Maintain regular hand hygiene by washing hands with soap under running water or using alcohol-based sanitizers.
Avoid unnecessary travel to countries currently experiencing Ebola outbreaks.
Healthcare workers were also urged to maintain a high index of suspicion when attending to patients, especially those with travel history to affected regions or presenting with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, vomiting, or bleeding.
The NCDC further advised individuals who have recently traveled to affected areas and develop symptoms suggestive of Ebola to immediately call its 24/7 toll-free line 6232, or contact their State Ministry of Health hotline for prompt assessment, isolation, and testing.
