Super Falcons interim coach Augustine Eguavoen says Nigeria are targeting gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games as the team prepares for its next qualifying encounter against Morocco.
Eguavoen spoke after Nigeria defeated Comoros 5-0 in the second leg of their qualifying tie in Ikenne, securing a 7-0 aggregate victory.
The coach said the team had agreed to put its disappointment at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations behind it and concentrate on the Olympic campaign.
“At the first meeting we had, we collectively agreed that we put the WAFCON disappointment behind us and set our eyes on the gold medal in the Olympics,” Eguavoen said, according to Punch Sports Extra.
He acknowledged that Nigeria would face stronger opposition as the qualifiers progressed but expressed confidence in the squad.
“Super Falcons are number one in Africa. We have the quality, we have the personnel, we have the support,” he said.
Eguavoen also praised the players for their performance against Comoros, noting that their training efforts had translated into a strong display on the pitch.
However, the coach expressed concern over captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was substituted after suffering an injury. He said she was being taken for an MRI scan to determine the extent of the problem.
Nigeria will face Morocco in the third qualifying round as the team continues its campaign for a place at the 2028 Olympics.
