The Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan recorded its first flight on Wednesday, following months of closure for an upgrade to international standards.

The aircraft, an advanced member of the presidential fleet, touched down at exactly 9:14 a.m., marking the airport’s reopening after being shut since March 2025. The flight arrived ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Ibadan on Friday for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

Authorities say the successful landing demonstrates the airport’s readiness to handle high-profile flights, setting the tone for future operations.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had flagged off the airport upgrade project in September 2024, stating that the initiative would connect the state to global markets and enhance its economic competitiveness.

“The upgrade of the airport is expected to enhance air travel operations and provide a reliable transportation network for both business and leisure travellers, positioning the state for economic growth and development,” Makinde said at the groundbreaking.

His administration had earlier undertaken improvements at the airport, including the renovation of the VIP lounge, provision of a fire truck, and installation of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility.

The airport’s reopening comes just two days before the president’s expected arrival for the historic Olubadan coronation.
