Daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, has officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and emerged as the party’s candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District ahead of the next general election.

Obasanjo-Bello was formally received into the PDP during a rally held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta on Wednesday. During the event, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, presented the party’s flag to her, confirming her nomination as the party’s senatorial candidate for Ogun Central.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tella said the presentation of the party flag signified the PDP’s endorsement of Obasanjo-Bello’s candidature for the Senate seat.

In her acceptance remarks, Obasanjo-Bello pledged loyalty to the PDP’s constitution, manifesto, and code of conduct. She also promised to serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, humility, and dedication while prioritising their welfare.

The former lawmaker represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 on the PDP platform before joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2026.

However, she resigned from the APC in June, citing alleged disrespect, betrayal, and unfair treatment by the party leadership following her unsuccessful bid for the party’s governorship ticket.

Obasanjo-Bello had declared interest in the Ogun governorship race shortly after joining the APC but later suspended her ambition after the party adopted Senator Solomon Adeola as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

In her resignation letter, she accused the APC leadership of failing to honour agreements and alleged that some of her supporters were mistreated during the process that led to the adoption of the consensus candidate.

With her return to the PDP, Obasanjo-Bello is set to contest for a return to the Senate, where she previously served as the representative of Ogun Central.
