ABUJA — The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027.

The proposed centre will enable eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination.

JAMB disclosed the plan following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.

The examination body said the initiative was aimed at improving access to the UTME for Nigerians in the diaspora seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.

According to JAMB, the Ottawa centre is part of its efforts to take Nigerian tertiary education closer to Nigerians living outside the country and strengthen their connection with the Nigerian education system.

The board said the initiative would reduce barriers faced by prospective candidates who currently have to travel to Nigeria to write the examination.

JAMB added that the proposed centre would also provide an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s tertiary education system internationally.

The centre is expected to commence operations in 2027, subject to the completion of necessary arrangements.
