Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has stressed the need for parents and guardians to prioritise vaccination as the state inaugurated its Taskforce on Immunisation and Primary Health Care Services.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting held at his office in Alausa, Ikeja, Hamzat described vaccination as one of the most reliable ways to protect children from life-threatening illnesses and build a healthier, disease-free society.
“Vaccination remains one of the most effective and reliable means to protect children, ensuring their growth and development in good health,” he said, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to support the state’s immunisation drive.
Hamzat emphasised that immunisation is a collective responsibility, pointing out that religious houses and royal fathers must help spread awareness. Citing the COVID-19 experience, he noted that many contagious diseases have been eliminated through vaccines and similar progress can be extended to other illnesses.
Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Hon. Lawal Aina, and Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, also lent their voices, urging local government chairmen and traditional leaders to mobilise residents for the programme.
Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustapha, added that the new taskforce underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening PHC governance and ensuring no one is left behind in accessing life-saving vaccines.
