The Lagos State Police Command has announced plans to begin a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised or missing registration number plates as part of efforts to enhance security across the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the exercise is in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at improving public safety and preventing criminals from concealing their identities.

According to the statement, the enforcement operation will commence on Monday, June 15, 2026, under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai.

The commissioner has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state to ensure strict compliance with the directive within their respective jurisdictions.

The command warned that any vehicle found violating the regulation would be impounded and subjected to investigation in accordance with existing laws and procedures.

The police, however, assured residents that the exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but is designed to improve the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track suspects and strengthen the state’s overall security framework.

Motorists, transport operators and fleet owners were advised to ensure their vehicles carry valid and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners were also urged to keep their documentation up to date and readily available for inspection when required.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the command called on residents to support the initiative by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious persons, vehicles or activities through designated emergency channels.

The police stressed that effective policing and improved security depend on the cooperation and support of the public.
