The Lagos State Government has launched a new strategic framework aimed at expanding sports entrepreneurship and attracting private investment into the sector, in a move designed to reposition sports as a key driver of economic growth in the state.
The initiative was unveiled by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), which says the plan will create structured pathways for investors, startups, and stakeholders across various segments of the sports industry.
The strategy focuses on developing a more organised sports ecosystem through asset mapping, improved operational structures, and the creation of visible entry points for investment. Key areas of focus include franchise-based local leagues, joint-venture facility development, and support for emerging businesses in sports technology, fitness and wellness, media, and performance analytics.

According to the Director General of the Commission, Lekan Fatodu, the initiative is designed to shift the perception of sports from recreation to a viable economic sector capable of generating sustainable value.
“We are deliberately transitioning the Lagos sports narrative from mere recreation to serious economic value creation. Talent is abundant in this state, but talent without an underpinning business ecosystem is unsustainable,” Fatodu said.
“These new measures are engineered to de-risk the sector for institutional investors while creating highly fertile ground for sports technology innovators, apparel manufacturers, and franchise owners to scale their operations within Lagos.”
He added that the Commission will deploy data-driven systems to track participation trends, identify infrastructure gaps, and assess commercial opportunities across different sporting disciplines.
The development aligns with the broader economic vision of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which continues to promote sports as a tool for youth empowerment, job creation, and enterprise development in Lagos State.
