A high-impact community health initiative, Light Up Ikosi, has brought relief and renewed hope to residents of Boola (Ghetto) community in Ikosi Ketu, Lagos, as over 150 individuals benefited from a comprehensive free medical outreach and community engagement programme.
The outreach, organized by Lighthouse Global in partnership with The King’s Pharmaceuticals, was designed to improve access to basic healthcare services, promote preventive health awareness, and strengthen community engagement within underserved populations.
Prepared by Pharm Emmanuel Obaseki, the programme attracted over 15 volunteers, including qualified medical personnel, who delivered a wide range of health services to residents.
Free Medical Services and Screenings
During the outreach, beneficiaries received free medical consultations and screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, weight checks, as well as tests for Hepatitis B & C and HIV. All attendees received at least one form of health check, while 100% of participants also benefited from health education and medication counselling.
Free medications such as pain relievers, multivitamins, immune boosters, blood builders, and deworming tablets were distributed to patients based on their needs. Cases requiring further attention were referred to appropriate healthcare facilities.
In addition, beneficiaries were educated on the proper use of health products such as Safe Preg, while live sampling of Calgovit Vitamin C and Calgovit 3-in-1 supplements enhanced awareness and acceptance of nutritional support solutions.
Holistic Care and Community Impact
Beyond medical services, the outreach emphasized holistic well-being. A spiritual leader was present to offer prayers and emotional support, contributing to the overall care of participants.
To further deepen community engagement, organizers hosted a chess competition for children, promoting mental development and positive social interaction. Winners in both male and female categories received awards, while a monthly chess training programme was introduced to ensure sustained impact.
Key Outcomes and Insights
The initiative recorded strong participation from both adults and children, highlighting the urgent need for accessible healthcare in underserved communities like Boola. Organizers noted that free screenings and personalized counselling significantly improved awareness of preventive care and responsible medication use.
The outreach also strengthened trust between the community and healthcare providers, while boosting visibility for participating brands through direct engagement and product sampling.
Speaking on the success of the programme, Emmanuel Obaseki stated: “Access to basic healthcare services remains a critical need within underserved communities such as Boola. This outreach not only delivered essential care to over 150 individuals but also improved awareness of preventive health practices and responsible medication use, while strengthening community trust.”
A Scalable Model for Impact
Organizers described the Light Up Ikosi initiative as a scalable model that can be replicated across similar communities in Lagos and beyond. They emphasized that sustained interventions—such as periodic medical outreaches, continuous health education, and structured youth programmes—can significantly improve long-term health outcomes while fostering community development.
