Operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad (CAVS), Sector 2, Ughelli, have rescued a three-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped by a commercial motorcyclist responsible for taking her to school daily.
The suspect, identified as Kelvin Ogaga, was arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father on May 18. According to the police, the father reported that his daughter had been abducted by the motorcyclist whom the family had entrusted with transporting the child to and from school.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly kidnapped the child and demanded a ransom of N500,000 from her family. The police said the family eventually paid the amount after negotiations in order to secure the girl’s release.
Acting on credible technical intelligence, operatives traced the suspect to his hideout in Ughelli, where he was apprehended. During the operation, officers recovered N127,000 suspected to be part of the ransom money, as well as other valuables allegedly purchased with proceeds of the crime. The motorcycle reportedly used in carrying out the abduction was also recovered.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
“The suspect was arrested following intelligence-led operations. Recovered exhibits include part of the ransom money, other items believed to have been purchased with proceeds of the crime, and the motorcycle used in the commission of the offence,” Edafe said.
The police assured members of the public of their commitment to tackling crime across the state and urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
