The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its clampdown on counterfeit products, arresting an unlicensed chemical producer and sealing off illegal factories in Abuja.
In a major enforcement operation, NAFDAC operatives apprehended Mr. Ikechukwu Elijah in the Apo-Waru area for manufacturing and distributing hazardous, counterfeit, and unregistered chemicals. The suspect, who ran his operation from a residential building, was arrested alongside his younger brother. Items recovered included counterfeit insecticides, sealing machines, and other equipment used in the illicit trade.
The agency also shut down MZEE Table Water in Damangaza district for operating under unhygienic conditions with a fake and expired license. Investigations revealed the facility lacked essential infrastructure such as a certified borehole and water treatment system.
In another sting, NAFDAC sealed off a counterfeit rice operation at a shopping plaza opposite the World Trade Centre, Abuja. Officials seized re-bagged popular brands, packaging materials, and sealing machines valued at more than ₦60 million.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting public health. She urged Nigerians to avoid unregulated products and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that all suspects would face prosecution.
