LAGOS — Inter Lagos have been handed a three-point and three-goal deduction by the Nigeria Premier Football League following an incident involving match officials during their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United.
The sanctions followed findings that the Lagos-based club failed to provide adequate security at the venue, while match officials were reportedly harassed and assaulted after the game.
According to the NPFL disciplinary decision, unauthorised persons gained access to restricted areas, after which match officials were attacked while making their way from the dressing room to their vehicle.
The league also found that the officials were held at the venue for more than an hour after the match.
Inter Lagos were fined ₦2 million for inadequate security, another ₦1 million for holding the officials hostage and ₦2 million over the assault.
An additional ₦250,000 was ordered as compensation to the affected assistant referee for personal belongings lost or damaged, medical treatment and damage to his mobile phone.
The disciplinary panel also imposed a three-point and three-goal deduction on the club.
The sanctions could affect Inter Lagos’ position in the NPFL standings as the season progresses.
The club has 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the decision.
