A landlord identified as Chief Gbenga Ajibade has been accused of forcefully administering a poisonous substance to a young man alleged to have stolen maize in the Itetii Ayo area of Ilesa, Osun State.
In a disturbing video shared by Isaac Haastrup, a journalist with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), the victim is seen pleading for mercy, explaining that hunger had driven him to commit the act.
Following the incident, the young man was rushed to a nearby hospital close to Aromolaran Grammar School, and later transferred to Wesley Teaching Hospital for more advanced treatment. Reports indicate that he is still battling serious stomach complications.
Reacting to the incident, the Ijesa Sports Club, where Chief Ajibade is a member, has announced his immediate suspension pending the outcome of an ongoing police investigation into what is being described as an attempted murder.
In a statement released on August 7, 2025, the club’s spokesperson, Hon. Kenneth Opebiyi, condemned the act as “unacceptable and alarming.”
“The Executive Committee of Ijesa Sports Club wishes to announce the immediate suspension of Chief Gbenga Ajibade, pending the conclusion of investigations by law enforcement agencies regarding his alleged involvement in a serious incident of attempted murder,” the statement read.
The club explained that the decision was taken during an emergency meeting held on August 6, where members expressed deep concern over the viral social media footage.
“The images depicting the events surrounding this incident are not only alarming but damaging to the reputation of our esteemed Club. The committee reached a majority decision to suspend Chief Ajibade until the investigation is finalized,” the statement continued.
The club emphasized that it would not condone actions that tarnish its reputation, adding that disciplinary action would follow once the authorities conclude their probe.
“The integrity and image of Ijesa Sports Club are of utmost importance to us. We cannot allow any member’s actions to bring disrepute to our organization, which has been built on a foundation of respect and community values over the years.”
“As a respected institution in Ijesaland, Ijesa Sports Club abhors any behavior that undermines the lives and dignity of fellow citizens. It is our firm position that no individual is above the law, and we stand in solidarity with the values of justice and accountability.”
The Osun State Police Command has not yet issued a formal statement, but sources indicate that an investigation is ongoing to determine the facts and appropriate legal response.
