The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three suspects aged 22, 27 and 36 in connection with the murder of a 66-year-old veteran broadcaster, Mrs. Olakitan Oyesiku, and her security guard in Abeokuta.
The State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, disclosed this on Thursday at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, describing the arrests as a major breakthrough in the investigation.
Ojajuni said the suspects were apprehended following intelligence-led investigations, technical tracking of Oyesiku’s missing Lexus RX 330 SUV, and forensic analysis of a handwritten note recovered from the crime scene.
According to the police commissioner, the incident was reported on June 21 after neighbours observed suspicious activities at Oyesiku’s residence and alerted security operatives.
Responding officers reportedly discovered the lifeless body of Pelumi Adetayo, Oyesiku’s security guard, in the security house, while the broadcaster’s body was found inside the living room of the residence. Preliminary investigations revealed that the front door had been forcefully opened, while the deceased’s Lexus SUV was missing.
Ojajuni said detectives successfully traced and recovered the stolen vehicle on June 22 in the Onikolobo area of Abeokuta. Although the vehicle’s number plates had been removed and the ignition key was missing, investigators found one of the registration plates concealed beneath a seat, enabling them to establish ownership.
The police boss identified the principal suspect as 22-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip, who was arrested on June 24 at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta. Subsequent operations led to the arrest of Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27, and Sobu Obafunsho, 36.
According to Ojajuni, Philip confessed to recruiting the other suspects and orchestrating the attack due to a personal grievance linked to his previous employment as a security guard at Oyesiku’s residence.
Police alleged that the suspects first attacked Adetayo to gain access into the house before killing both victims and fleeing with Oyesiku’s Lexus RX 330 SUV.
Investigators also recovered a broken hammer, a cutlass, a plank and other items believed to have been used in carrying out the crime.
The commissioner assured residents that investigations are ongoing and pledged that all individuals connected to the incident would be brought to justice.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that all persons connected with this heinous crime are brought to book,” Ojajuni stated.
