The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of an officer accused of extorting a motorist in Idimu, Lagos.
The incident came to light following a viral video in which a driver alleged he was stopped by the officer despite having complete vehicle documentation. The motorist claimed the officer accused him of a discrepancy in the vehicle’s colour, insisting it was “grey” instead of “ash” as indicated in official records.
According to the driver, the officer allegedly threatened him with arrest before demanding ₦30,000, which was later reduced to ₦10,000.
In a statement issued after the video gained traction online, the police said the officer has been identified, arrested, detained, and queried in connection with the allegation.
The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, adding that further details regarding the outcome of the investigation will be made public. It also emphasized ongoing efforts under the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to enforce discipline and accountability within the ranks.
