Troops under Operation Enduring Peace have stepped up security operations across the Jos metropolis as part of efforts to curb the escalation of violence and restore calm in affected communities.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, disclosed that the troops conducted a comprehensive stop-and-search exercise on Friday, targeting key flashpoints within Jos North and surrounding areas.
According to him, the intensified security presence yielded significant results, including the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of dangerous weapons.
“The troops successfully intercepted and arrested two suspects and recovered one fabricated AK-47 rifle, four rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a pump-action gun alongside a cutlass,” Oteh stated.
He explained that the operations were strategically carried out across high-risk locations, including Dadinkowa, Old Airport Junction, Tudun Wada, and the State Low-Cost Housing Estate, spanning both Jos North and Jos South.
In a related development, the task force responded to a distress call following reports of sporadic gunfire in the Yelwa Cattle Market area of Shendam. Oteh noted that the swift intervention of troops forced the attackers to flee.
“Upon arrival, the unidentified gunmen retreated into nearby bushes due to superior tactical pressure from our troops,” he said.
He added that during a follow-up sweep, two residents who sustained gunshot wounds were discovered and immediately evacuated to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Reaffirming the commitment of the operation to restoring peace, Oteh emphasized that security forces would maintain a strong presence across the state.
“The Command remains resolute in sustaining a dominant security posture throughout Plateau State. Operations will continue with increased vigour until all threats are neutralised and lasting peace is restored,” he added.
