The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Engr. Ibrahim Adigun, has urged young people to actively participate in community development and democratic processes, emphasizing that youth engagement remains critical to sustainable growth and national progress.
Adigun made the call while addressing young people at the Commonwealth Day of Service organised by the Rotaract eClub Commonwealth at the Students’ Arcade of Lagos State University (LASU).
In his remarks, the NYCN chairman highlighted the significant contributions of international service organisations such as Rotary International in advancing development across the world, particularly within the 56 member countries of the Commonwealth.
According to him, such organisations have continued to demonstrate how volunteerism and service-driven leadership can drive meaningful social impact and community transformation.
Adigun commended the leadership of the Rotaract eClub Commonwealth, led by Rotaractor Abdullahi Hamzat, for promoting the ideals of the Commonwealth through initiatives that encourage service, unity and youth participation in development-oriented activities.
“International service organisations like Rotary have played a vital role in advancing development across the globe, particularly within the Commonwealth nations. Their model of service to humanity continues to inspire young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities,” he said.
The NYCN chairman also used the opportunity to encourage youths across Lagos State to strengthen their involvement in volunteer-based platforms such as Rotaract and other civic organisations.
He noted that such platforms provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership capacity while contributing to socio-developmental initiatives.
“I urged the young people present to see themselves as agents of positive change and ambassadors of Lagos State and Nigeria wherever they find themselves,” Adigun stated.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State chapter, to working closely with organisations and stakeholders to promote unity, civic engagement, and sustainable development across the state.
Adigun also called on eligible voters who are yet to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, describing it as an important step in strengthening democratic participation.
“Obtaining a Permanent Voter’s Card remains a crucial step in empowering citizens to participate actively in the democratic process and shape the future of our state and the nation,” he added.
The event formed part of activities marking Commonwealth Day, which focuses on promoting unity, cooperation and development among member nations while encouraging youth participation in community service and leadership.
