The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has emphasized that a unified and coordinated approach among Nigeria’s security agencies is indispensable for addressing the country’s evolving security threats.
The COAS made the remarks while receiving the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, during the IGP’s maiden familiarisation visit to Army Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, the IGP highlighted the need for strengthened collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force, describing inter-agency synergy as crucial to effectively tackling internal security challenges. He commended the long-standing partnership between both institutions and stressed that such cooperation is vital to achieving national security objectives.
The IGP also expressed appreciation for the Army’s support in capacity development, particularly in training Police Mobile Force personnel, which has enhanced operational effectiveness across multiple theatres. He assured the COAS of continued intelligence sharing and operational coordination to reinforce joint security operations.
Responding, the COAS congratulated the IGP on his appointment as the 23rd Inspector General of Police and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to deepening joint efforts under his command philosophy. He noted that their professional relationship dates back to their joint service in the United Nations Mission in Darfur, highlighting a shared foundation of cooperation in complex operational environments.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also acknowledged the Police’s support in ongoing operations in Kogi, Kwara, and Niger States, where efforts against banditry and kidnapping have recorded tangible results. He assured that the Nigerian Army will continue to support the Police, stressing that lasting peace and security can only be achieved through a well-coordinated, unified inter-agency framework.
