The Federal Government has issued a security advisory to Nigerians residing in or visiting the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East.
In a press release dated February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation, particularly military actions reportedly undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory measures affecting parts of the Gulf region.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria is closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the Middle East,” the ministry stated, adding that heightened tensions could lead to further escalation.
The government advised Nigerians in the affected areas to remain vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times. “Avoid areas known to be strategic, military, or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints,” the statement said.
It also urged citizens to limit non-essential movement and avoid large gatherings or public demonstrations until the security situation stabilises. Nigerians were further directed to strictly comply with safety instructions issued by local authorities.
“Citizens are strongly advised to strictly comply with all security and safety directives issued by the local authorities to ensure their safety,” the ministry said, while cautioning against misinformation and encouraging reliance on official channels for updates.
The statement noted that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are on high alert to provide consular assistance where necessary.
“We wish to assure the general public that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government,” the ministry added.
The government also called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace and coexistence.
The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.
