The Federal Government has unveiled renegotiated agreements with unions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, urging workers to embrace dialogue and avoid strikes that could disrupt academic activities.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, made the appeal on Tuesday in Abuja during the presentation of the agreements between the government and staff unions.

Alausa said President Bola Tinubu was committed to fulfilling his administration’s promises to Nigerians.

“We have a President who did not make campaign promises merely to win an election. He made those promises with the intention of working decisively to fulfil them once sworn into office,” the minister said.

Chairman of the Federal Government Negotiation Team, Yayale Ahmed, also urged union leaders to give the implementation process an opportunity, warning that threats of industrial action could undermine progress.

Ahmed said the agreements marked the beginning of another phase of engagement between the government and the unions.

Meanwhile, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities President, Muhammed Ibrahim, commended the government for progress on workers’ demands but called for the release of outstanding agreements and circulars.

The implementation of the agreements is expected to be closely watched by university workers and students, particularly as stakeholders seek to prevent further disruption to academic calendars.
