Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2–1 in their Round of 16 encounter.
The Nigerian side secured the victory on Thursday, October 29, following an impressive performance against their North American opponents.
Forward Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 40th minute, giving the Flamingos a 1–0 advantage before the half-time break.
Nigeria returned for the second half with renewed attacking intent and extended their lead through Mary Dunstan, who found the net in the 72nd minute.
The two-goal advantage put the Nigerian team in a strong position as the match approached its closing stages.
However, Mexico refused to surrender and reduced the deficit through Evelyn Delgado in the 90+11th minute, setting up a tense finish.
Despite the late pressure, the Flamingos maintained their defensive organisation to protect their lead and secure qualification for the last eight.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s campaign alive as the team continues its pursuit of the tournament title in Morocco.
Head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will now turn their attention to the quarter-final encounter against Venezuela, scheduled for Sunday, November 1.
The match presents another opportunity for the Nigerian youngsters to progress further in the competition.
Nigeria’s qualification also keeps the country’s hopes alive in the tournament, with the team needing another strong performance to secure a place in the semi-finals.
