The woman at the centre of a viral controversy involving a Nigerian man who accused his wife of secretly owning multiple properties—including the house they both lived in—has spoken out, offering a deeply personal account of her actions.
Her response comes after the husband alleged that he had unknowingly paid rent for years on a property owned by his wife, alongside claims that she concealed several businesses and assets from him throughout their marriage.
In her emotional explanation, the woman linked her decisions to a painful childhood experience involving her parents. She recounted how her mother dedicated her life to building her father’s success, only to be abandoned during a critical time of illness.
According to her, that experience shaped her determination never to be financially vulnerable in marriage.
“I know I shouldn’t have, but I’m coming from a really, really bad place. When I was a child, I witnessed my mom striving to make my dad who he is. She did everything humanly possible to see that my father succeeded,” she said.
She described her mother as the driving force behind her father’s thriving businesses, noting that all assets were placed solely in her father’s name.
“When my mom fell ill, everything she had was not in her name. All my father needed to do was release money to take care of her, but he kicked her out and sent her to the village,” she added.
The woman revealed that her mother eventually died in poverty without access to proper medical care—a tragedy she says left a lasting mark on her.
“My mom, with all her sweat, died as a pauper. She couldn’t even get medical attention. And I swore it would never happen to me,” she stated.
Addressing the allegations directly, she admitted to keeping her assets secret but framed it as a protective measure rooted in fear and past trauma.
The controversy has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians divided over issues of trust, financial independence, and transparency in marriage. While some sympathise with her background, others argue that secrecy of such magnitude undermines the foundation of marital trust.
