National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, has called for calm following the forceful takeover of the national secretariat of the union in Abuja by a rival faction.
The leadership crisis within the union escalated on Monday after a group led by Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa reportedly stormed the secretariat, triggering tension among members and raising concerns over control of the influential transport body.
In an official statement dated March 23, 2026, Akinsanya dismissed the legitimacy of the action, stating that he was not a party to the court judgment being cited to justify the takeover and that legal steps have already been taken to challenge it.
“I was not a defendant in the purported judgment, and the judgment has been appealed with a stay of execution duly entered,” he said.
He further noted that he has avoided any engagement with Baruwa or other parties involved due to ongoing legal proceedings, while assuring members that security agencies have taken charge of the situation, and urging them to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
“I have not engaged with Mr. Baruwa… The situation is under the control of security agencies. All members are urged to maintain peace and order,” he added.
