The Kwara State House of Assembly on Wednesday deliberated on the urgent need for government intervention in the increasing trend of unregulated sperm and egg donation in the state.
Leading the debate, Hon. Rukayat Shittu expressed deep concern that many young male and female students are being lured into the practice for financial gain without fully understanding the medical, psychological, social, ethical, and moral consequences.

She noted that financial hardship is a major driver, pushing students to embrace the practice due to the monetary incentives involved. “Many students are being lured by monetary gains without fully grasping the implications of their decisions,” she said.
Shittu particularly highlighted the health risks associated with egg donation, stressing that the procedure requires hormonal stimulation and surgery, which may result in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), infections, or long-term fertility complications.

The lawmaker, therefore, called for urgent sensitization campaigns to empower young people with adequate knowledge, enabling them to make informed choices rather than fall victim to ignorance or exploitation.
