Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday led a Federal Government delegation to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State to commiserate with residents following a deadly attack on Nuku and Woro villages that reportedly claimed over 170 lives.
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, who joined the condolence visit, offered words of comfort to grieving families and prayed for strength in the face of the painful loss.
“As Muslims, we believe in destiny, but it is our sincere prayer that this kind of tragedy will not happen again,” Zulum said while addressing affected residents.
Speaking during the visit, Vice President Shettima conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s condolences to the people of the state and assured them of immediate federal intervention to stabilize the area.
“We are here on behalf of President Tinubu to commiserate with the people of Kwara State over this tragic loss,” Shettima stated. “These were peaceful citizens going about their daily lives when the incident occurred. The development has deeply shocked the nation.”
He disclosed that the President had directed the deployment of a Nigerian Army battalion to the affected communities to restore peace and prevent further violence. He also announced that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had been instructed to provide relief materials and support for displaced residents.
While confirming the military deployment, Shettima declined to give operational details, noting the sensitive nature of security efforts. He, however, reassured the community that decisive steps were being taken.
“All hands are on deck to stabilize the area and ensure the safety of lives and property,” he added.
Governor Zulum, who also spoke in his capacity as Chairman of the North-East Governors’ Forum, extended condolences on behalf of states that have similarly faced insurgency-related challenges, urging unity, patience, and sustained prayers for peace.
