Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a salary increase for security guards at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, raising their pay from ₦18,800 to ₦80,000.
The decision followed an interactive session during the governor’s visit to the hospital on September 30, where one of the security guards openly complained about their poor remuneration.
“We are suffering. I have a family with three children. Please help us,” the guard lamented, disclosing that they earn only ₦18,800 monthly without benefits since they were not recognized as permanent staff of the institution.
While hospital officials explained that the security services were outsourced at ₦27,000 per guard, the governor ordered an immediate termination of the contract with the private firm. He further directed that all 67 security guards be absorbed as ad-hoc workers of the hospital and paid ₦80,000 monthly, effective October 1.
Governor Makinde’s intervention has been hailed as a bold step to improve workers’ welfare and address long-standing grievances at the state-owned health institution.
