Kudos to the Nigerian Army. Our gallant soldiers deserve nothing but commendation for rescuing all the kidnapped passengers in Kogi State.

This successful operation is more than just a headline—it is a strong indication that our soldiers are committed to their duty and ever ready to defend and protect Nigerians. In less than 48 hours, all the passengers reportedly kidnapped along the expressway were rescued alive. That kind of speed and precision cannot go unnoticed.

In a viral video, the passengers could be heard thanking the soldiers for their early intervention. “Thank you for saving our lives,” some of the victims said amid sobbing. Among them were children, seen crying in fear but alive and safe.

What struck me most in that video was not just the rescue itself, but the compassion shown by the soldiers. They were not only protectors but also caretakers in that moment. The clip captured soldiers serving water to the victims. One voice could be heard saying, “Give that little child water.” That level of humanity in uniform deserves recognition.

To fully appreciate what this rescue means, it is important to understand the broader kidnapping crisis in Kogi. In recent years, the state has become notorious for frequent abductions, particularly along forested expressways and in local government areas such as Kabba-Bunu, Yagba East, Yagba West, and Ijumu. Kidnappers have not only targeted travellers but also high-profile individuals, including retired military officers and traditional rulers. Tragically, in one instance, Major Joe Ajayi, a retired army officer, was kidnapped from his home in Odo-Ape, and despite ransom payments, he was later found dead in a forest.

These kidnappings are sustained by a disturbing network of local collaborators who supply criminals hiding in the forests with food, fuel, water, and other necessities. Such complicity makes the work of security agencies even harder and deepens the atmosphere of fear across communities. In many parts of Kogi, villagers are now too scared to farm or travel freely. This has led to protests, with angry youths blocking highways to demand stronger government action against kidnappers.

The Kogi State government, in collaboration with security agencies, has since intensified crackdowns. Dozens of suspects have been arrested, including not just kidnappers themselves but also those who aid them. Yet, despite these efforts, the menace persists, and each successful rescue—like the one we just witnessed—is a powerful victory in a long and difficult fight.

In a situation like this, it is always important to commend the soldiers for a job well done. It is not flattery; it is motivation. The more we acknowledge their sacrifice and bravery, the more encouraged they are to keep doing more.

For me, this Kogi rescue is a reminder: our army is not just about weapons and battles, but also about compassion, duty, and the protection of life. They deserve our respect, our gratitude, and yes, our applause.
