The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to sanction officers captured in a viral video allegedly harassing two young men in the Abulado area of Lagos.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on March 4, showed the officers stopping a vehicle occupied by the young men—one of whom is described as an upcoming rap artist—and ordering them out for a search. According to the footage, the officers attempted to move the individuals to another location to conduct the search, a decision that was questioned by the victims.
Tension escalated when one of the young men began recording the encounter using smart eyeglasses, prompting visible irritation from the officers in the video.
The footage has since sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians on social media, with many condemning the officers’ conduct and calling for accountability within the police force.
Reacting to the development, the Police Complaint Response Unit disclosed that the Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, has directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Satellite Town, Lagos, to present the officers involved in Abuja on April 8 for disciplinary proceedings.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the unit confirmed that the officers have been identified and will face sanctions.
“Dear members of the public, the policemen in the viral video have been identified and appropriate disciplinary actions await them accordingly. We seek your support and trust as we fight impunity to a standstill,” the statement read.
The police reiterated their commitment to addressing misconduct within the force and urged the public to continue reporting cases of abuse and unprofessional behaviour by officers.
