President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to restore peace and strengthen security across the country, assuring him of his full backing.

The President gave the charge on Wednesday at the State House during the decoration of Disu as Acting IGP, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun. Disu’s appointment is pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” Tinubu said.

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical time, the President urged the new police chief to rebuild public confidence in the Force and collaborate effectively with other security agencies.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” he added.

Tinubu called on Disu to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience and leadership capacity.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President said, reaffirming his belief that the country would prevail under committed leadership.

The President also paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, thanking him for his service and urging him to support his successor.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” Tinubu said.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” he added.

Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside senior government officials and family members of the Acting IGP.
