The Yobe State Government has formally taken ownership of 176 housing units from the Federal Government at a cost of over ₦2 billion, in a move aimed at tackling the state’s housing deficit and expanding access to affordable homes.
The handover ceremony, held at the Maisandari Housing Estate in Damaturu, saw the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, represented by Mathius Iliya Kastula, officially transfer the estate to Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, who was represented by the state’s Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmad Buba.
Governor Buni commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the transfer, describing the gesture as a reflection of the President’s commitment to helping states address pressing developmental needs.
> “This project is not just about buildings, but about restoring dignity to our people by giving them access to affordable and decent shelter,” Governor Buni said.
Officials at the event, including the Minister’s representative and State Controller of Housing, Muazu Abubakar, praised Governor Buni for prioritising housing delivery and ensuring the property was secured for the benefit of Yobe citizens.
Ahmad Buba disclosed that out of 208 housing units originally built by the Federal Government, the state purchased 176 completed units, while work is underway to rehabilitate the remaining 32 unfinished structures before allocation. He added that the project would help reduce the housing deficit, stabilize rents, ease urban congestion, generate jobs through rehabilitation works, and boost economic activities in surrounding communities.
The official takeover of the Maisandari Housing Estate marks a significant milestone in Governor Buni’s housing agenda, underscoring his administration’s drive to provide safe, affordable, and sustainable shelter for the people of Yobe State.
